50 Years from 2020, A New Years Letter to My Son
Dear Owen,
I just sent you a care package. It includes our old game Pandemic you requested. It was fun getting that from you, Christmas 2013, after you started at University of Vermont. I’m glad of that scholarship for your grades, your Computer Science major, a Teaching Assistantship, that self-evolving robot project. I hope Artificial Intelligence, Economics, and your game theory interests prove useful since Covid-19 has hit us so hard.
Covid-19, is your golden chance to demonstrate what risk-taking can do to build your virtual community capacity. We all need confidence, opportunity, and responsibility. My parents called taking a risk like that “having chances to fail cheaply.” Your generation needs to risk where we have failed, even if it does not come cheap. Please, instead of apps, organize your robot friends to build tools for diverse, innovative ecosystems. With the next wave of stimulation anticipation, I hope we make it possible to put 40 million people back to work on a New, Global, or whatever we call it New Deal that will get us to 2050. Start small. Succeed and the competition will find you, just like you did so well at robotics and at VEX Worlds. Enlist the curious.
